Anthropic Ends Claude Subscription Auth for OpenClaw: Here's Your Migration Guide
Anthropic is cutting subscription-based OAuth for third-party agents like OpenClaw on April 4, 2026. Here's exactly how to migrate to API keys in under 3 minutes.
Anthropic is ending subscription-based OAuth authentication for third-party agents — including OpenClaw — on April 4, 2026 at 12pm PT.
If you've been running OpenClaw on your Claude Pro or Max subscription, that auth method stops working today. Your three options: API keys (recommended), Extra Usage bundles, or OpenRouter.
The migration takes under 3 minutes. Your agent configs, memory, skills, and tool setups all stay intact — it's purely an auth layer swap.
What's Changing
Until today, OpenClaw users could authenticate with Anthropic's Claude models using their Claude Pro or Max subscription. You'd sign in with your Anthropic account, and OpenClaw would use your subscription's token allocation to run agents.
Anthropic is removing this option for all third-party tools. After 12pm PT today, any OpenClaw setup relying on subscription-based OAuth will stop being able to call Claude models. Your agent won't crash — it just won't be able to reach Anthropic's API until you switch to one of the three alternatives below.
Important: Your actual OpenClaw configuration is not affected. Your tool configs, memory backends, installed skills, SOUL.md, AGENTS.md, cron jobs — all of that persists. The only thing changing is how OpenClaw proves to Anthropic that you're authorized to use their models.
Option 1: Direct API Keys (Recommended)
This is the simplest, most reliable path. It takes about 90 seconds.
Step 1: Create an API Key
- Go to console.anthropic.com
- Navigate to API Keys
- Click Create Key
- Name it something recognizable (e.g., "openclaw-main")
- Copy the key — you won't see it again
Step 2: Add to OpenClaw
- Open OpenClaw's web UI or config
- Go to Settings → AI Providers → Anthropic
- Paste your API key
- Save
That's it. Your agent will immediately start using the API key for all Claude model calls. Everything else — your tool configurations, memory, skills — stays exactly as it was.
Cost Expectations
API billing is pay-per-token. Most personal OpenClaw setups run $5–20 per month depending on usage patterns. You can set a monthly spending cap in the Anthropic Console under Settings → Usage Limits to prevent any surprises.
If you were previously on a $20/month Claude Pro subscription, your API costs will likely be comparable for moderate usage. Heavy autonomous task loops may cost more, but you get granular control over exactly what you're spending.
Option 2: Extra Usage Bundles
If you want a middle path — staying closer to subscription-style billing without setting up full API infrastructure — Extra Usage bundles are available directly from your Claude account.
- Pay-as-you-go credits without the complexity of API key management
- Available through your existing Claude account
- No separate billing infrastructure needed
This is a good option if you're not comfortable managing API keys directly, or if you want to keep everything under one Claude account roof.
Option 3: OpenRouter
OpenRouter works today and gives you model redundancy as a bonus. If you've been meaning to diversify your AI providers, this is a natural time to do it.
Setup
- Go to openrouter.ai and create an account (if you don't have one)
- Generate an API key
- In OpenClaw: Settings → AI Providers → OpenRouter → paste key
- Point at
anthropic/claude-sonnet-4-5(or whichever Claude variant you use)
Why OpenRouter?
- Model redundancy: If one provider goes down or changes pricing, you can switch models without reconfiguring anything
- Unified billing: One dashboard for all your AI model usage across providers
- Per-key spend limits: Set credit limits per API key to isolate OpenClaw spending from other tools
What Doesn't Change
This is worth repeating because it's the #1 question we're seeing: your OpenClaw setup is not affected beyond the auth swap.
- Tool configurations — all persist
- Memory backends — untouched
- Installed skills — still installed, still working
- SOUL.md, AGENTS.md — no changes needed
- Cron jobs and scheduled tasks — keep running (once auth is updated)
- Chat history and session logs — all intact
The only thing changing is the credential OpenClaw uses to talk to Anthropic's API. Everything downstream of that credential stays the same.
How ClawMentor Can Help
If you've got a complex agent stack — multiple providers, custom model routing, cost controls, cron-based automation — and you want to make sure everything works cleanly after the migration, that's exactly what our update packages handle.
Each update package includes compatibility checks, cost configuration tuning, and rollback protection. We verify your auth is working, your model routing is optimal for the new billing model, and nothing broke in the transition.
If your agent stack feels messier than it should, our update packages handle compatibility, cost config, and rollback protection. First update package free at clawmentor.ai.
Common questions
Will my agent configs break?+
No. Your tool configurations, memory backends, skill installations, and agent setups all persist. The only thing changing is how OpenClaw authenticates with Anthropic — it's purely an auth layer swap. Your SOUL.md, AGENTS.md, cron jobs, and everything else stay exactly as they are.
Is API key usage more expensive than my subscription?+
It depends on your usage, but most personal OpenClaw setups run $5–20/month on API billing. If you're a moderate user, that's often comparable to — or cheaper than — what you were effectively paying through your subscription. Heavy users with lots of autonomous loops may spend more, but you also get granular control over costs with per-key spend limits.
What if I'm already using API keys?+
Nothing changes for you. This cutoff only affects users who were authenticating through Claude subscription-based OAuth. If you set up an API key from console.anthropic.com and pasted it into your OpenClaw settings, you're unaffected.
What about Extra Usage bundles?+
Extra Usage bundles are available directly from your Claude account as a middle path. They give you pay-as-you-go access without setting up full API billing infrastructure. Think of it as subscription-adjacent usage credits — you buy bundles and use them until they run out.
